SUCCESSFUL AGING FOR THE SPIRIT

Spiritual wellness is one of the eight dimensions of wellness and is a vital element to maintaining good overall health. Finding a connection to your inner values can give meaning to your days and expand your sense of purpose. When you are spiritually well, you will begin to find it easier to get through those more difficult times in your life.

It’s important to find a connection with others who share your beliefs and values. Staying socially connected with your peers through spiritual activities can help you find and maintain that vital inner peace you crave.

Spiritual Activities for Seniors at Concordia

Spirituality refers to thoughts, feelings or experiences related to the soul and can help you better cope with issues like health problems and difficult situations. Those who are spiritual are less likely to suffer from depression and are more likely to take good care of their health.

At Concordia Life Care Community, we believe a strong soul is vital to the quality of life of our residents. Refreshing your soul each day offers numerous benefits, and residents are encouraged to join us each day for our morning devotional to start the day off right.

Keeping your soul healthy requires social connection to others who share your beliefs. To support this, we offer a variety of religious classes and bible study groups for seniors as well as other social opportunities like planned outings for breakfast and lunch.

We also host a Caregiver Support Meeting with Mel Roberts to ensure that the family caregivers of our residents are receiving the care and support they may need to avoid caregiver burnout and unnecessary stress.

Mel Roberts, LCSW

Mel Roberts graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 2000, with a Master’s Degree in Social Work. Since that time she has become licensed as a Clinical Social Worker, and has received an Advanced Certification as a Social Work Case Manager. Mel has devoted all of her years of practice, and many years prior to receiving her degree, to the service of elders. She worked several years for Catholic Charities in Senior Adult Ministry. She also worked at Edmond Medical Center in their in-patient geriatric evaluation center. In the last several years she has worked for Elder Care Solutions as a Geriatric Care Manager. For five years, Mel facilitated a support group for people with Early Onset Alzheimer’s Disease. In her spare time she loves to volunteer at her church in several different capacities; spend time entertaining family and friends; and playing golf (which she doesn’t do very well) with her husband, Cliff. Working with elders feeds her spirit.
